Navajyothi Special School is situated in Amboori Panchayat, a remote village in Thiruvananthpuram District in Kerala. It is started with eight children in June 1996, in a rented building. We found the children with diability and not fit for normal schooling through our field visit. We conducted an assessent and evaluated the level of their disability and divided them into five section - Pre primary, Primary, Secondary, Pre Vocational and Vocational. We gave training for developing skills such as functional, social, daily living, academic, vocational, cultural as instructed in IEP. Physical and mental therapies are given to those for whom it is necessary. This establishment was registered under Charitable Societies Act in 1998 September. Now there are 59 students studying in different sections. A few had completed their training and doing some jobs to earn for their living.
People who are disabled or mentally shriveled and dunce from birth or in early childhood destined to live in the dark corners of the society facing bitter side of life and their parents are struggling for them. Navajyothi special school is working to bring this disabled people to the main stream of the society and to deal with others. With this aim we are providing comprehensive and holistic rehabilitation services and development programs of constructing, facilitating and empowering environment by developing functional, social, self help, daily living, academic and cultural skills.
